The documented history of Sedgefield begins with the turn of the century.  Over the years the Club has enjoyed and/or endured a wide variety of changes.

The land that is now the Sedgefield Country Club was part of a 4,000 acre hunting preserve owned by John Blackwell Cobb, a wealthy industrialist.  Cobb died in 1923 and his daughters sold most of the property to a group incorporated as Sedgefield, Inc. The leader of the group was A.W. McAlister, a prominent Greensboro businessman whose avid interest in golf led to the incorporation of Sedgefield Country Club in 1925.  On October 24, 1925, memberships were accepted and the Donald Ross designed golf course opened with S.B. Miller as first Manager.

In those early days amenities for members, in addition to golf and tennis, included riding lessons and fishing in a large private lake.  The Sedgefield Inn, today a landmark in the community, was built in 1925.  The Manor House served as the first Clubhouse and Andy Gray, born in Scotland, was the first Golf Pro.  During the Great Depression, Sedgefield, Inc. and Sedgefield Country Club were
dissolved.  Sedgefield changed hands many times.  In 1951, the Inn was purchased by the Sedgefield Hotel Corporation and restored to use for conventions, meetings, and social functions. In 1967 the Inn was purchased by the membership of Sedgefield Country Club and, until the summer of 1992, it served as both Clubhouse and Hotel.

The original Inn/Clubhouse was completely renovated during 1992-1993.  Renovation of the Inn permitted the members to maintain this historical Tudor building while combining all the wonderful conveniences of today's modern Country Clubs.  The Clubhouse contains 48,000 square feet featuring the original main lobby that offers warmth
and hospitality along with a sense of tranquility of the past.  The open-hearth fireplace is the key to the elegant lobby.  The Formal Dining Room and Embassy Grille on the main level offer great views of Sedgefield Country Club's country setting while you casually or elegantly dine, depending on your culinary tastes.  Our Red Fox Lounge, Gallery Area and Men's Lounge all offer an airy feeling for a place to relax and have quiet conversation.  The feel of an updated English Pub is evident in the Red Fox Lounge, while the Gallery and Men's Lounge offer superb views of the legendary Donald Ross Golf Course.  The Manor Ballroom on the lower level is capable of serving over 500 people for a wedding reception or 300 at an elegant, formal sit down dinner.

The Golf Shop is located on the main level just to the right of the casual entrance for convenience to the #1 Tee.  The Administrative Offices and Board Room are located on the upper level along with the Men's and Women's Locker Rooms.

Sedgefield Country Club is truly a marvel to behold, offering all the amenities of a first class Country Club housed in an elegant Tudor Building constructed at the turn of the century and recently refined for the discerning tastes of Sedgefield Country Club's current membership.  The various activities of the Club are mentioned in more detail on subsequent pages to better allow you to understand the variety of golf, tennis, and fine dining programs available to our members.

Over the years the configuration of the golf course changed many times, for a variety of reasons.  For many years (1938-1961) it was the alternate site of the Greater Greensboro Open with Starmount Forest Country Club.  Then, for 16 years, Sedgefield hosted the GGO through 1976.  In 1988, in a major undertaking, the course was restored to the original Donald Ross design.

In 1976, a new and enlarged tennis facility was built.  It is said to be one of the finest in Guilford County.

A new era in history is upon us, indelibly marked with a new full-service Clubhouse enclosed within the same architecture that has stood these many years as a symbol of tradition and culture of Sedgefield Country Club.
